VIC:Truck kills pedestrian in Vic
MELBOURNE, Aug 6 AAP - A young male pedestrian has been killed by a truck in Victoria's west.
Police said he appeared to have been walking along Drapers Road, Colac East, when struck
by the truck about 6.20am on Saturday.
The victim, believed to be 17 or 18 years old, died at the scene.
The truck driver, a 43-year-old man from Ballarat, is assisting police with their inquiries.
The Victorian road toll stands at 182, one more than at the same time last year.
Meanwhile, two women have been injured by a hit and run driver in Melbourne's western
suburbs early on Saturday.
The 18-year-old and the 29-year-old were walking on a dirt path next to Tarneit Road,
Hoppers Crossing, about 4.40am when they were hit by the car. One was thrown into the
bushes and the other was knocked over.
Police said the car failed to stop and are appealing for the driver to come forward.
The women, from Tarneit, were taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital with non-life threatening
injuries.

The head of the nation's peak welfare group has urged politicians not to sensationalise
the debate on asylum seekers.
A boat carrying 79 passengers and four crew was intercepted two days ago .. the 34th
asylum seeker boat to arrive this year.
With Australia's offshore processing facility on Christmas Island at breaking point
.. the federal government is under pressure to solve the asylum seeker crisis.
ACOSS chief executive CLARE MARTIN has warned the debate is becoming potentially alarming
and divisive.
She's told Network Ten everyone has to recognise the reality .. we do have asylum seekers.
Ms MARTIN says it's very important for our political leaders to keep the debate at
a reasonable level .. not to be emotive.
She's called on Labor to manage the asylum seeker flow in an effective and humane way.

QLD: PM's wife lauds charity tax benefits
By Darren Cartwright
BRISBANE, Aug 21 AAP - Therese Rein has praised the benefits of greater tax breaks
for charity donations as she unveiled a new program for the homeless.
The wife of Prime Minister Kevin Rudd is patron of the Australian Common Ground Alliance,
which on Friday unveiled a $40 million program to tackle homelessness in Queensland.
Speaking at the launch function in Brisbane, Ms Rein said philanthropy was alive and
well in the United States, where Common Ground originated.
"I've got to say that we hear a lot about philanthropy in the United States," Ms Rein said.
"You need to know that for every 70 cents donated by a corporation, or an individual,
they get $1 off their tax.
"I hadn't understood that until last year."
She said the New York Common Ground project had raised $US35 million ($A42 million)
using the tax break.
The proposed Brisbane Common Ground project will create 146 housing units and will
be the state's first permanent supportive housing project for people who are homeless
or on low incomes.
"They are not offered a temporary bed. They are not offered a tenancy that only lasts
a certain time and then have to leave," Ms Rein said.
"They are offered a tenancy as long as they want to be there.
"The commitment is they will pay 30 per cent of their income."
She said in the New York project about a third of tenants had not been homeless but
were low-paid workers.
Federal Housing Minister Tanya Plibersek and Queensland Community Services Minister
Karen Struthers announced a joint federal-state commitment of $4.38 million to the project.
Construction company Grocon is building the complex on a no-profit basis, with any
savings to be given back to the project.
A facility is already operating in Adelaide, and a Melbourne project is under construction.
A property has been earmarked in South Brisbane for the complex, but it remains subject
to negotiations.
Common Ground chairwoman Penny Tarrant said plans for the building were at the design
stage, with construction expected in 2010.
"It's a very tight timeline," Ms Tarrant said.
The tenant mix would be 50-50 homeless and low-income workers and all would be single people.
It is estimated on any given night in Brisbane, 2,070 people are homeless, including
288 sleeping rough and 1,325 in boarding houses.

QLD: Yacht search cancelled too early, families claim
By Evan Schwarten
TOWNSVILLE, Qld, Aug 4 AAP - Relatives of three men who disappeared from a yacht off
the coast of north Queensland have told an inquest they believe authorities called off
the search too early.
Derek "Des" Batten, 56, Peter Tunstead, 69, and Jim Tunstead, 63, were embarking on
a journey from Airlie Beach to their home in Perth when they disappeared from their yacht,
Kaz II, in April last year off the coast of Townsville.
A massive search operation involving up to 10 aircraft was launched but was called
off within 10 days on the advice of a "survival" expert who told authorities the men could
not have survived that long in open water.
However, Jim Tunstead's daughter Keryn Mackenzie-Grae today told the inquest into the
men's disappearance she believed authorities should have persisted with the search.
"I felt they stopped too soon," she said.
The trio's family launched their own search soon after the cancellation but were also
unsuccessful.
Queensland state coroner Michael Barnes is conducting a week-long inquest into the
disappearance in Townsville.
A large contingent of relatives have travelled from Western Australia for the hearing.
The inquest heard Mr Batten had purchased the vessel with his wife Jenny in 2006 and
he had enlisted his neighbour Peter Tunstead and his brother Jim to sail it back to Perth.
They began planning the trip about 10 weeks in advance and underwent training in the
lead-up to the voyage.
Des Batten had more than 25 years experience with boats and had volunteered with Fremantle
Sea Rescue for a year and a half and was well-versed in safety procedures.
He had also promised his neighbour's wife, Frances, he would not take any risks and
the trio did not plan to sail at night for most of the voyage, which was expected to take
up to eight weeks.
Counsel assisting the inquiry Julie Wilson told the court it might not be possible
to determine the men's fate.
"It may be that exactly what happened to these men will remain unknown," she said.
The inquest continues.

The OECD has given the federal government a huge wake-up call .. arguing Australia
needs to embrace a range of major economic changes if it's to continue being the lucky
country.
In its annual survey .. the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development says
the surge in commodity prices has delivered a major income boost to the nation.
But it warns this could be squandered if federal and state governments do not make more changes.
It's called for ..
- an extension of the GST to fresh food ..
- indexing personal income tax rates ..
- phasing out industrial awards ..
- extending welfare to work changes to all people on government handouts ..
- and even giving states their own income taxes.
The OECD says Australia has also made its own luck through structural reforms across
a wide range of sectors that have boosted national income.
However .. it believes that luck could come to an abrupt halt with an end in the surge
in commodity prices and a drop in productivity growth.

Fed: A-League in "quiet" opening season
Eds; Please note time element in second par.
By Danny Rose
MELBOURNE, AAP - Australia's new national soccer code appears to have dodged one of
the world game's least endearing features - the soccer hooligan.
The A-League will enter its inaugural finals series this weekend, on track to record
game crowds totalling a million people during its first season.
Football Federation of Australia (FFA) Head of Operations Matt Carroll has said A-League
crowd-related violence is a non-issue.
A senior police officer who has monitored the sport at a grassroots level in Victoria
also described A-League games as "quiet" from a policing perspective.
It is in stark contrast to events in the build-up to the A-League's slick launch in
August, when there were violent clashes at state level soccer matches in both Sydney and
Melbourne.
About 50 supporters of rival Croatian and Serbian-backed clubs clashed violently after
a NSW state league fixture in March.
In April, hundreds of fans from rival Macedonian and expatriate Greek-backed state
clubs also clashed in Melbourne, prompting a statement from national soccer chief John
O'Neill that the A-League would be different.
He said the A-League would feature one team per city or region and - critically - these
teams would not be aligned to any single ethnic group.
Mr Carroll said the policy was primarily to allow the A-League's eight fledgling teams
(seven in Australia and one in New Zealand) room to "breathe" and to establish support
bases and commercial networks.
"Certainly we've achieved that," Mr Carroll said this week.
"And yes, it has united football fans and they are going along as football fans that
are proud of their teams.
"Whether that be Melbourne Victory or Sydney FC, or Queensland Roar, wherever."
The first round of the A-League finals gets underway this weekend, and the total crowd
figure across the ordinary season was 920,219.
An A-League match in Sydney drew the new code's biggest crowd of 25,557 while the largest
crowd in Melbourne was a sell-out at 18,206.
The average attendance at an A-League match across the whole season was 10,955, and
these crowds are typically dominated by supporters of the home team.
It raises the prospect of soccer fans once pitched at each other at state-level games
now cheering side by side against the opposition from interstate.
"It's not been an issue at all for us, I can't think anywhere where it has been an
issue across Australia," Mr Carroll said of crowd-related violence at A-League matches.
He also said the riots at state-league matches were "very effectively" dealt with by
the state federations, with measures including lock-outs for fans who were not paid-up
club supporters.
Victoria Police Inspector Chris Duthie, who for five years has kept a watch on soccer
related violence in Victoria's state league, says the A-League is quiet in comparison.
He also said it was wrong to characterise the violence solely as an offshoot of historic
conflict.
"The rivalries are put down to ethnic grounds ... but a lot of these ethnic issues
are just a camouflage for bad behaviour," Insp Duthie said.
"Many of the young people involved were born in Australia, and have little idea about
what has gone on in the old country.
" ... I really don't think we have these issues with A-League soccer."
He said the A-League's deliberate move to create teams that were not aligned to any
single ethnic group had worked.
"There is no excuse anymore, and so far it has been running very quietly, like the AFL," he said.
Insp Duthie said improvements in the design of sporting facilities - in particular
the removal of standing-only areas - also had contributed to a general reduction in crowd
violence over the years.

Vic: World Vision Aust chief fears for Sri Lankan workers
MELBOURNE, Dec 28 AAP - World Vision aid workers in Sri Lanka remain missing following
the tsunami disaster that swept southern Asia, World Vision Australia chief executive
Tim Costello said today.
Mr Costello, who will today fly to Sri Lanka to offer aid workers comfort and support,
said some of the 300 aid workers in Sri Lanka, mostly locals, were still missing following
the tsunami on Sunday.
"In Sri Lanka there are still staff unaccounted for," Mr Costello told ABC Radio today.
"We know there are family members who have died and, in the confusion, we're still
trying to account for all the staff."
Almost 24,000 people, including 11,000 in Sri Lanka, have died from the tsunami, which
was generated by a massive earthquake off the coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra
on Sunday and swept the Indian Ocean.
Huge waves swept about 7,000 km as far as Africa, crashing on to the shores of Kenya
and Somalia, affecting the islands of Mauritius, Reunion and the Seychelles on the way.
Mr Costello said his role in Sri Lanka would be to support staff working to save lives
and restore order in Sri Lanka.
"I guess (my role is) to try and really keep up morale, to try and say to our staff
that (they) haven't been forgotten, that this ... tsunami that destroys lives in seven
different nations isn't just your problem, it's our problem."
The first priority for aid workers was to provide basics such as food and fresh water,
Mr Costello said.
"The irony of a tsunami and a flood is that you'd think that people had seen enough
water but in fact now a shortage of water is the problem," he said.
"They simply can't get enough clean water and water-borne diseases really do have the
potential to almost kill as many again.
"Many areas are still inaccessible so, in the first instance, it's just stabilising
human life, getting food, getting water and getting blankets is just going to be the next
week's target.
"After a week we'll reassess and say, `well, how do we try and rebuild infrastructure
and homes and water systems?', but right at the moment it's the rawest, direct relief
to just preserve life.

Mary Hart exits âEntertainment Tonightâ on a high note
The list of exiting TV personalities seems to lengthen every day: Oprah Winfrey; Regis Philbin; Larry King; Katie Couric; Jim Lehrer; Meredith Vieira.
Don't overlook Mary Hart, whose last "Entertainment Tonight" broadcast airs at 6:30 May 20 on WBBM-Channel 2. Celebrity and entertainment coverage has changed markedly since she began anchoring the show in its first year in 1982.
It was the first weekday syndicated show devoted solely to entertainment news when it began, and has remained at the top of the ratings as similar shows came along. And "ET," as it is fondly known, remains one of the top sources for celeb news among the many other shows, websites, magazines and news outlets now covering the subject.
"She will be missed," said Bill Carroll, an expert in the syndicated television market for Katz Media. "She has become iconic."
Hart earned a hug from David Letterman and her own "Late Show" Top Ten list last week: "Things Mary Hart Has Learned in 29 Years of Hosting 'Entertainment Tonight.'" (No. 4: "Tom Hanks is a total loser," as the camera cut to tape of a befuddled Hanks. No. 1 was: "Nothing.")
Hart, a former Miss South Dakota and now 60, has worked with five male co-hosts, most notably John Tesh and currently Mark Steines. Nancy O'Dell will replace her.
"I'd been thinking about this for a very long time knowing it would be difficult, and it is difficult," Hart said. "It's a very strange feeling knowing that I'm doing a final show and actually saying goodbye on the air. It makes me very emotional at times."
Hart said she never intended to be on the show that long but liked the people with whom she worked and it was a good job to have for her and her marriage to producer Burt Sugarman, and their son.
Now, she said, "If I want to do something else, I have to do it now. I can't wait." She's not sure what she'll be doing — it might include television, it might not.
"When I look back and see the preponderance of reality TV and all these types of shows, it makes me think I don't want to be in television anymore," she said.
Hart is proud of her show's pioneer status and its ability to stay on top, and suggests it's not as fluffy as some critics assume it to be.
She also knows what shows such as hers have wrought.
"I find that celebrities are not as forthcoming as they used to be, because they are pulled in every direction," she said. The Internet has loosened standards about reporting and verification, she said, and added a nastiness in tone. "Entertainment Tonight" had its own problems three years ago after falsely reporting that Angelina Jolie had given birth to twins despite being told the report was a hoax.
Then there was the sad feeding frenzy around Charlie Sheen.
"We didn't even go after an interview with Charlie Sheen," she said. "We didn't have to. He was everywhere."
Two of the stories that stick to Hart personally through the years would have been perfect fodder for "Entertainment Tonight": her million-dollar legs, and the odd 1991 incident where a medical journal reported that the sound of Hart's voice triggered seizures in an epileptic woman, which inspired a "Seinfeld" episode.
Take those legs — so impressive that "Entertainment Tonight" put her behind a glass desk with special lighting so viewers wouldn't miss them.
"When I'm wearing pants and walking across a hotel lobby, people would say, 'Why aren't you showing off those legs?'" she said. "It is a little jarring. Still, I get a kick out of it. I can't take offense. I have nothing to complain about."
The time in her job has given Hart a perspective that few in her field can claim.
"I've seen people's attitudes be humble and swell and shrink again because everybody's career has an ebb and flow to it," she said. "Thirty years makes you really see that."

"With Hyperion Customer Interaction Center, we are confident that our CRM implementation will lead to our anticipated ROI."
Improving Call Center Management through CRM Business Analysis
Hyperion Customer Interaction Center uses sophisticated, best practice metrics to provide companies with a clear understanding of the real-time state of their call center performance. Businesses are able to analyze the data from their call center and front-office automation systems to identify trends, improve customer satisfaction, plan resource utilization, personalize customer service offerings, and benchmark their performance to peer groups and competitors.
"CRM technology implementations that lack CRM analysis capabilities result in the inability to effect change in the customer relationship," said Elizabeth Shahnam, vice president in META Group's CRM INfusion program. "There is a massive opportunity for companies investing in CRM to positively impact the customer relationship by deploying CRM analysis applications that bring together ACD, CTI, and individual customer data to create a panoramic view of the customer. The net effect of analyzing data from every point of interaction in the customer lifecycle has ultimately improved ROI."
Key Features in Hyperion Customer Interaction Center
Hyperion Customer Interaction Center is built on an enterprise-scale, cross-platform foundation that leverages the performance, scalability and unparalleled analytical capabilities of the market-leading Hyperion Essbase OLAP Server. Hyperion Customer Interaction Center is deployable over intranets, extranets and the Web. Key features and functionality in Hyperion Customer Interaction Center include:
- Customer Interaction Center Dashboard: Provides call center managers with a graphical interface to quickly assess the real-time state of call center operations and customer interactions. Key call center performance metrics, from backlog volume to time-to-completion, can be flexibly sorted by call priority, customer, case type and severity - delivering the most critical information necessary for the real-time management of enterprise call centers. - Response Cycle Analysis: Enables users to break down and analyze each individual step in the customer interaction process. This allows businesses to better understand what steps are required for which types of calls, how long each step takes to complete, where problem resolution gets bottlenecked, and what resources are required to resolve issues. Businesses can then fine-tune service practices to improve quality and customer satisfaction. - Key Performance Indicator (KPI) Trending: Tracks call center performance over multiple time periods to identify trends in key performance indicators such as overall case volume, average time-to-completion, and call backlog. Intuitive "stop light" reporting highlights positive or negative trends and makes it easy to identify areas that have improved or that need further attention. - Knowledge Base Link Analysis: Enables organizations to measure the utilization and effectiveness of call center representative knowledge bases in resolving customer questions. Knowledge base link analysis shows exactly how many calls accessed the knowledge base, how quickly they were resolved, and whether or not they were subsequently reopened. Companies are then able to use clear, hard facts instead guesswork in managing the call center. - Customer Dashboard and Report Card: Provides a graphical overview of the state of individual customers. Using key performance indicators as a guide, companies can track service levels, tailor service level agreements to a specific customer's needs, and ensure long-term customer satisfaction.

WORD OF MOUTH: Conversations on brands are vital. Discuss.
When consumers talk to each other about brands - and the average consumer talks about ten different brands a day - they are mostly very positive, making such discussions akey channel for marketers, a new study reveals. By Michael Barnett
Word of mouth could be an even more powerful marketing tool than previously thought, as most conversations consumers have about brands are highly positive. So say the findings of the UK pilot of a study that has been running continuously in the US since 2006, whose findings have been presented exclusively to Marketing Week.
In 62% of conversations brands are discussed in a "mostly positive" context, according to research carried out by Keller Fay. It recorded and analysed 14,000 conversations about brands by 2,500 adults during two weeks in May.
The inaugural TalkTrack Great Britain study, commissioned jointly by media agency Starcom MediaVest Group (SMG), publisher News International and broadcaster ESPN, assesses whether discussions about brands influence consumers. Subjects were asked to record details about the brands they talked about, how the conversations took place, what time of day it was, which media were referenced and what the sentiment of the conversation was.
The study reveals that 36% of those mentioning a brand are very likely to make a purchase. Keller Fay also contacted the individuals with whom the 2,500 adults had had conversations, to assess whether the discussion had influenced their consideration of a brand, or their intention to make a purchase.
On average, consumers speak about ten different brands a day. Among the most frequently mentioned brand categories are food and dining (mentioned by 64% of people each day), media and entertainment (63%), and beverages (57%).
The research indicates that the positivity garnered by brands at any given time is likely to be dependent on current events, with banks the worst performing category, perhaps owing to the recent financial crisis.
Adidas and Nike both scored well in terms of the proportion of positive mentions (with 77.6% and 75.3% respectively), at a time when media attention was focusing on the run-up to football's World Cup in South Africa.
Meanwhile, airlines fared relatively poorly, with the consequences of the Eyjafjallajokull volcano eruption and threatened strike action by air crew possibly having an effect.
Internet "buzz-tracking" surveys have enabled researchers to gauge the tenor of comments on blogs and social media for some time, however online mentions are only a small part of the wider discourse about brands, the data shows.
SMG product development director Paul Selby says: "One of the things that has contributed to the online buzz-tracking revolution is the number of peer-to-peer media sites - Facebook, Twitter, etc - which has really boosted the age-old debate about word of mouth. But it is a myth that all brand conversations happen online. It is actually the case, according to the TalkTrack data, that only 7% of brand conversations happen online, and this is consistent with the US data over the past four or five years.
"We are not just talking about the type of people who post comments on blogs and forums, we are talking about a nationally representative average person. The overwhelming majority of conversations are happening with those people, face to face or indeed over the phone."
According to TalkTrack, 81% of brand discussions happen face to face and 11% take place over the phone.
Power of online
Despite the low proportion of brand-oriented conversations happening online, it is the channel most commonly referred to when media and marketing are discussed in relation to brands. When online content is mentioned, 30% of the recipients of information are also "highly likely" to seek more details, compared with 20% where online media are not discussed.
Online and offline conversations also tend to differ in terms of brands mentioned. Technology gets a higher share of online mentions, while food and dining crop up more frequently offline.
Media channels and references are significant because conversations are more likely to include a recommendation of a brand when some form of media or marketing is also discussed, according to the research. It discovered that advertising is the biggest single driver of word of mouth, being cited in 17% of cases. Editorial content, websites and point-of-sale materials follow.
Simon Stanforth, group research director of SMG, says: "From an above- the-line advertising perspective, I think it demonstrates that offline campaigns need to work hard at driving word of mouth. There should not necessarily be a separate word-of-mouth strategy, because the core advertising campaign should have a key role in driving word of mouth."
As well as approaching word of mouth as a marketing objective rather than a discipline, marketers might be persuaded by the research to tailor campaign messages to particular demographics where the aim is to get people talking. No statistically significant difference was found in the positivity towards brands among men versus women, but consumers earning more than #15,000 a year are likelier to be positive while older subjects make fewer negative comments. Married people and those with children are also slightly more positive.
The 18- to 24-year-old demographic could be a "battleground" for brands, Selby notes. "Here there is a high proportion of negative comments about brands overall, but they are more likely to be influenced by and refer to media and marketing."
More important, however, is the profile of so-called Conversation Catalysts - a term trademarked by Keller Fay, referring to the 8% of the population who have the greatest influence when talking about brands. They discuss more than twice as many brands a day as the average consumer and are more than twice as likely to give advice in all brand categories. They also have nearly twice as many people in their social networks. These individuals are more likely than average to be wealthy, degree-educated and in a professional occupation.
Though it appears from the study that media advertising drives positive conversations, it does not necessarily follow that those brands spending most on advertising are earning the most positive reviews. Marketers would do well to monitor what consumers say about their brands to understand when these conversations are positive and how these conversations translate into sales.

'Mr. Central' bids adieu after 46 years of teaching.(NEWS)
Byline: JON TEVLIN; STAFF WRITER
The student was a few minutes late for her broadcast journalism class, so she slid into the room and quietly took a seat.
"We're not interfering with your busy social schedule by holding class, are we?" snapped teacher Jack Schlukebier. "Good."
As the newscast began, "Schlick" paced as though it was going out to the world, not just the students of St. Paul Central High School. After it was over, he offered a quick, "Good job, everybody."
The girl who arrived late asked Schlukebier if he would be there next year. "No. Because I don't like you." She smiles broadly.
Up in the control booth one student sighed. "I can't believe he's going. It will be so weird without him."
He is called "Mr. Central," and "the soul of the school" by students and staff. He's also called grumpy, wise, loving, gruff, sarcastic, temperamental and "the best teacher in the world."
Schlukebier will be leaving Central High after 31 years -- and 46 years teaching in the St. Paul school district. He's one of the longest-tenured teachers in the system, and by all accounts, one of the most beloved.
I visited Schlukebier's classes on two of his last days at Central. In one, he introduced me as a reporter doing a story on terrorists inside the schools. At the next, he deadpanned that I was doing a piece on juvenile delinquents.
Tallinn Cavanaugh, a student in Schlukebier's journalism class, said he spent most of the year trying to figure out when Schlukebier was being sarcastic, or just honest. "Then I thought, maybe he was never being sarcastic."
"If you don't know him on a personal level, you might not like him," said student Alexandra Leaskas. "But he's like a grandpa to me."
Central High "is not going to be the same without him,'' said Ashley Neisen.
That's because Schlukebier has so many roles at Central that they have already spread his duties to three teachers. Besides teaching English, journalism and broadcast journalism, Schlukebier is senior adviser, oversees the newspaper and yearbook, shoots photos at all school events, and takes seniors on almost anachronistic outings, such as bowling and snow tubing. He orchestrates the graduation ceremony and insists it has to be "classy," and shows it by wearing a tux.
A proud German, he holds a famous Oktoberfest party at his house and blocks off the street. Jack and his wife, Judy, were high school sweethearts, and have attended more than 20 proms at Central together.
"Nobody spends more time or attends more events than Jack," said Brian Reinhardt, a fellow teacher. "He's built the community of Central."
"He's firm, he's tough, he's exacting," said Principal Mary Mackbee. I asked her how he seems to get so much from his students. "He badgers them," she said with a laugh. "But they never leave his class."
Teri Lentsch, the assistant principal, said simply that Schlukebier "makes high school what it should be."
During a break on Friday, Schlukebier sat in his van in the parking lot, smoking Borkum Riff as he contemplated 46 years as a teacher. Kids are smarter, in many ways, but the number of dysfunctional students is growing, he said.
"That does not bode well for schools or society. It's not about money, it's about willpower."
What will he miss?
"I think the challenge of figuring out how to make all this work," Schlukebier said. "I had to be better than Jay Leno, the Internet and MTV, and I had to do it every day. It was an intellectual challenge, a psychological challenge, even a spiritual challenge.
"But there was not one day in 46 years that I wasn't excited to go to school," he said. As he mused about how he might come back on contract for a few projects next year, you could tell that leaving will be painful.
When Schlukebier took the stage for his annual address to incoming seniors Friday, the students stood and chanted: "Jack! Jack! Jack!"
When he spoke, his "little demons" went silent.
"Forty-five people who sat here last year didn't make the [graduation] walk last night," he boomed. "Will YOU be there?"
Wooooooooo!
"Seniors say, 'We rule the school,' but you don't rule crap," said Schlukebier. "But you can lead. Decide if you want to lead, or follow. If you don't want to do either, get out of the way."
Wooooooo!
In one of his final poetry classes last week, they were studying the song "The Boxer," by Paul Simon, and its use of metaphor. A student peeked at a cellphone. "Put that away," said Schlukebier. "Let's not have this. This is ridiculous."
They talked about the ending of The Boxer. The protagonist is battered and worn, and he's quitting.
"What does it mean?" asked Schlukebier.
"He's leaving, he's going home," said Michael Burton. "But he's still a fighter. He's still going strong."
There is a brief pause.
"Good observation," said Schlukebier.

SonicWALL Expands Next-Generation Firewall Lineup with NSA E8510.
INTEROP --SonicWALL, Inc., the leading provider of intelligent network security and data protection solutions, today launched the SonicWALL NSA E8510, the latest addition to its range of next-generation firewalls. The Network Security Appliance (NSA) E8510 provides 10 Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) connectivity in a compact, 1U rack mountable form-factor to accommodate security, performance and power efficiency requirements of modern high-capacity networks. The appliance is powered by SonicWALL's SonicOS 5.8 firmware, which offers latency-free intrusion prevention and anti-malware protection. SonicOS 5.8 features application intelligence and control functionality for granular control over application traffic and bandwidth in real-time. With the ability to block or throttle application usage on a user or group level, and its compact form factor and affordable price, the E8510 is an ideal solution for corporate, healthcare and education deployments.
As organizations expand their existing networking infrastructure, firewalls are often overlooked and can become a critical bottleneck. When network infrastructures are upgraded to 10 GbE to accommodate for growth in bandwidth requirements beyond 1 Gigabit per second (Gbps), these upgrades can be neutralized by firewalls that are unable to handle high bandwidth requirements or connectivitiy. This is especially true as an increasing number of security-conscious organizations replace their traditional firewalls with a new breed of deep packet inspection (DPI) firewalls that provide protection against the evolving threat ecosystem and the network attack vectors prevalent today.
The SonicWALL NSA E8510 addresses these performance concerns with dual 10 GbE SFP+ ports and high performance full DPI which does not introduce latency to the network. Combined with the SonicWALL Application Intelligence and Control features, this 10 GbE next-generation firewall provides high-speed network performance and ensures security with integrated intrusion prevention (IPS), anti-malware and SSL traffic protection.
"The NSA E8510 Next-Generation Firewall is designed for enterprises that need multi-gigabit network performance, application control and comprehensive security features," said Dmitriy Ayrapetov, product line manager, SonicWALL. "It builds on what is already the broadest range of next-generation firewalls on the market and offers a robust solution to customers with 10 GbE infrastructure requirements."
"We congratulate SonicWALL on their innovative 1U 10 Gigabit Ethernet Security Appliance which effectively leverages the leading performance, low-latency and low-power of Cavium's OCTEON Multi-core processor," said YJ Kim, general manager, infrastructure processor group, Cavium Networks. "This new SonicWALL appliance will enable customers to garner great benefits in terms of rack space, compelling performance and features".
The new appliance capitalizes on SonicWALL's industry-leading application intelligence and control solution, putting the power back in the hands of IT administrators with new levels of management and ease-of-use. Based on a continuously expanding database containing more than 3,500 application signatures, administrators can easily create bandwidth management or control policies across the network. These can be based on individual applications, collections of applications or entire pre-defined categories (such as social media or gaming) for users or groups of users to optimize network and employee efficiency.
When combining the power and flexibility of the NSA E8510 appliance with the efficiency gains provided by the recently announced SonicWALL WAN Acceleration Appliance (WXA) Series and application intelligence and control features, organizations realize significant gains in efficiency, optimization and performance of critical applications both on local and distributed networks.

TERMINAL STUPIDITY; The passengers who now check in at our swanky new terminal... before taking the long trek back to the OLD boarding gates.(News)
Byline: Philip Ryan
AIRLINE passengers checking in at Dublin Airport's controversial new Terminal 2 are being forced to walk back to the original terminal to board their planes.
The highly criticised terminal, or T2 as it is also known, opened in November at a cost of [euro]600m - almost [euro]400m over its original budget. Now the Irish Mail on Sunday can reveal that, in spite of massive State investment in the project, the new terminal cannot accommodate all flights scheduled to leave from it.
Travellers on up to six flights every morning, during the airport's busiest period, regularly check in and proceed through security in the new terminal - before being instructed to walk through a maze of corridors back to the old terminal.
Incredibly, the DAA said this weekend that it had planned such a system all along, insisting: 'It was designed this way.' Flights affected by this scheduling regime generally include Aer Lingus short-haul connections to Britain and central Europe in the early hours of the morning between 6.30am and 7am.
There are around 95 daily flights from the new terminal, which was highly criticised by Ryanair chief executive Michael O'Leary, who branded the project a 'palace'.
At the opening of T2 last November, DAA chief executive Declan Collier went to great lengths to highlight the emphasis the new terminal put on customer satisfaction and convenience. 'The opening of Terminal 2 will transform the travel experience throughout Dublin Airport and will offer passengers the type of facilities, comfort and space they have been seeking for many years', he said.
Elsewhere, the authority's website states: 'T2 will be a 75,000 square metre building designed specifically with travellers' needs in mind'.
However, comfort is far from passengers' minds as they walk through security in the state-ofthe-art T2 only to be told they must walk back to the old building to board their planes.
The new terminal can facilitate up to 19 short-haul aeroplanes or eight long-haul aircraft and is the Irish hub for Aer Lingus, Etihad and the four US airlines currently serving Dublin: American Airlines, Continental, Delta and US Airways.
However, the scheduling problem affects solely the Irish operator's passengers as they are the only airline operating short-haul flights which can be accommodated more easily than long-haul in the old terminal.
Generally, flyers who arrive in T2 would board their flights at Pier E or the gates numbered in the 400s which were built to provide for planes landing at and leaving the new terminal.
The majority of flights scheduled for T2 but departing from the old terminal now leave from Pier B at gates numbered in the 300s.
It all means that travellers arriving at the airport during rush hour would be well advised to leave additional time for their journey to include the long walk to the old terminal gates.
One disgruntled passenger, who checked in at Terminal 2 but boarded in the old terminal, took to internet travel website Tripadvisor.
com to lambast the airport for its boarding arrangements.
She said: 'We made our way to our boarding gate, we walked and walked and suddenly found ourselves in Terminal 1' 'We actually departed from right next to the former US immigration area. I think it used to be called Pier B? 'It seems that all the 400 numbered boarding gates are in T2 but anything lower is in T1.
'I thought Aer Lingus had moved to T2.' However, the DAA said the boarding procedure, which forces passengers to trek between terminals, was not an oversight and was actually factored in to the original design of the project.
A DAA spokesman said: 'We always knew this was going to happen, it was designed this way. We knew from the start that at the peak time that a small number of flights would go this way.
'It's roughly about five flights a day. It's one of the reasons why, when we were building T2, that there was actually a connection between the two terminals, they are built to operate that way.
'It's a common airfield, the airfield and boarding gates are shared by the two terminals.' He added: 'Scheduling would be live scheduling to take into account any particular aircraft that might be arriving early or late.
'They know within the peak almost every day there are about five flights, some days there might be four and some days there might be six.' The DAA said the increased demand for gates at the airport's new terminal was because they had to facilitate two Irish Airlines.
The spokesman said: 'We have particular circumstances here, where we have two home-based carriers which would be atypical for most European airports.
'Most European airports wouldn't have two airlines based at the airport with a significant fleet. It's not a problem it just means there is an increased demand, we have a very busy first wave.
'People don't expect it to be that busy early in the morning around 6.30am to 7am but it's actually the busiest time of the day.
'You have Ryanair and Aer Lingus using this as their home base and both have a significant amount of aircraft so they both want to get those aircraft in the air at the earliest time of the day.
'The longer they have the aircraft in the air the more money they are making.' Aer Lingus did not respond to calls for comment last night.

About SQUEEZETRIGGER.COM
WWW.SQUEEZETRIGGER.COM is a service designed to help bonafide shareholders of publicly traded US companies fight short selling. SqueezeTrigger.com has built a proprietary database that uses Threshold list feeds and short sale time and sale data from NASDAQ, AMEX and NYSE to generate detailed and useful information to combat the short selling problem. For the first time, actual trade by trade data is available to the public that shows the attempted size, actual size, price and average value of short sales in stocks that have been shorted. This information is valuable in determining the precise point at which short sellers go out-of-the-money and start losing on their short trades.
SQUEEZETRIGGER.COM has built a massive database that collects, analyzes and publishes a proprietary SqueezeTrigger for each stock that has been shorted. The SqueezeTrigger database of nearly 2.5 billion short sale transactions goes back to January 1, 2005 and calculates the exact price at which the Total Short Interest is short in each stock. This data was never before available prior to January 1, 2005 because the Self Regulatory Organizations (primary exchanges) guarded it aggressively. After the SEC passed Regulation SHO, exchanges were forced to allow data processors like SqueezeTrigger.com to access the data.
The SqueezeTrigger database collects individual short trade data on over 7,000 NYSE, AMEX and NASDAQ stocks and general short trade data on nearly 8,000 OTCBB and PINKSHEET stocks. Each month the database grows by approximately 50,000,000 short sale transactions and provides investors with the knowledge necessary to time when to buy and sell stocks with outstanding short positions. By tracking the size and price of each montha'a"s short transactions, SQUEEZETRIGGER.COM provides institutions, traders, analysts, journalists and individual investors the exact price point where short sellers start losing money and a short squeeze can begin.
